The pressure of being a disabled employee

Being a disabled employee can have its challenges. I'm not for one second saying that disabled people shouldn't work, far from it! However, to be under the impression that it's easy would be misleading. The level of support from employers can vary. Yet the pressures I'd like to highlight are not related to this. I'm wanting to show what it can be like for a disabled employee, how public attitudes and having a condition can affect employment.

Here’s why we should employ disabled people

Finding employment can be a challenge for most people, and if you have a disability this can be made even more difficult! Scope's campaign #WorkWithMe, which is in collaboration with Virgin Media, has been about highlighting that disabled people are twice as likely to be unemployed when compared to non-disabled people and that this simply cannot carry on! They encourage employers to make a pledge and demonstrate their commitment to thinking and acting differently about disability in the workplace...

With my degree being in psychology and child development, it will come as no surprise that most of the cohort end up in schools or nurseries. However, after thinki§ng about the career I would like after university, and looking at the experience I already had, I felt something a little different would be more appropriate. This is where RNIB came in. The charity support blind and partially sighted people in many ways and I had worked on campaigns with them in the past. I felt doing a placement with RNIB would allow…

    Employment is round the corner

Employment is closer than I think, and that in itself is terrifying! The uncertainties about employment are what make it seem daunting, when in actual fact I’m also excited for what the next chapter has in store. However, before I even starting thinking about a job, I still need to find a suitable work placement for the end of this academic year! At the grand age of 19, I’ve never had a job. I’ve babysat for some friends and volunteered in a charity shop for a few months, but nothing more then that. This doesn’t mean I don’t want a job, or that I would be incapable of getting any…
