What is it like being a disabled student?

When I was in high school, I used to wobble around the corridors using a walking stick or a wheelchair. I throughly enjoyed education, yet it certainly isn’t easy as a disabled student. Admittedly, it’s been a few years since I was a student, but accessible education was a core focus when I started my blog. Before I graduated university, my blog was called ’Life as a Cerebral Palsy student’. A few weeks ago I gave a keynote talk to 1600 high school staff members about my experiences of being a disabled student. I hope that sharing an edited version of that talk will useful for other teachers and disabled…

The end of ‘Life as a Sixth Form student’

Yet again I find my find myself at the end of an era, moving on to ‘bigger and better things’ they say, when it only seems like two minutes ago that I had finished my GCSE’s! After being at the same school for 7 years, I am not only finishing as a sixth form student but also saying a final goodbye to high school and all that it has entailed.  In my opinion sixth form has been amazing in so many ways. Like each year of education, it’s a step up from what you are used to- having to learn more and more each time. Oh and the university preparation. I’d be lying if I said it was an easy step up from GCSE’s, but in reality that’s probably true for the majority of people studying at college or sixth form. When you think it will be fine with only 4 subjects and free periods- oh how wrong! The coursework, exams, extra curricular, but let’s not forget and the…

What I want my peers to know

Hey everyone! Sixth form has well and truly started with work mounting. Also new pupils come from other schools, this means I have been able to make some new friend which has been great. On the other hand, the minority have seen it as an opportunity to make judgment on something which they will know very little about- the purpose for this post. What I want all my peers to know. The worst thing about having a disability is that they see it before they see you, before they get the chance to know you. I haven’t even opened my mouth, yet I know you have a preconceived idea…
